Exploring Asphalt

Types and Innovations

Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA)

The most commonly used type, HMA is mixed at high temperatures (between 300°F and 350°F) to decrease the viscosity for proper coating and compaction. It's used for constructing highways, roads, and parking lots due to its durability.

Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA)

Mixed at 30-120°F lower than HMA, WMA uses additives or foaming technologies to reduce the viscosity and work at lower temperatures. This reduction offers environmental benefits like lower emissions and energy consumption.

Cold Mix Asphalt

Prepared at ambient temperature, it's mainly used for patching work and minor repairs. Cold mix asphalt is not suitable for high-traffic areas but is excellent for rural roads and temporary fixes.

Porous Asphalt

Designed for water management, porous asphalt allows water to drain through the pavement surface into a sub-base reservoir. It's used in parking lots and other surfaces to manage stormwater effectively.

Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP)

RAP uses removed and reprocessed pavement materials containing asphalt and aggregates. It's an eco-friendly solution that reduces the need for new raw materials, decreases landfill waste, and lowers greenhouse gas emissions.

Rubberized Asphalt

Incorporates crumb rubber from recycled tires into the asphalt mix, enhancing the material's flexibility and resistance to cracking. It's particularly useful in regions with wide temperature fluctuations.

Each type of asphalt has its unique properties and applications, reflecting the versatility of asphalt as a paving material. Advances in asphalt technology continue to address environmental concerns, improve safety, and enhance performance, making asphalt a continuously evolving and innovative material in the construction industry.

Asphalt Issues Inspected

Cracking

  • Fatigue Cracking: Often resembling alligator skin, it's caused by load-related deterioration.

  • Edge Cracking: Occurs along the edges of roads without curbs, due to lack of support.

  • Reflection Cracking: Happens when cracks in the underlying layer surface through the top layer of the asphalt.

  • Block Cracking: Large rectangular cracks, usually due to the asphalt mix not expanding and contracting properly with temperature changes.

Lance can diagnose the underlying causes of cracking and recommend the best repair strategies, including proper selection of materials and techniques to prevent future occurrences.

Potholes

Formed when water seeps into the pavement through cracks, freezes, expands, and then thaws, loosening the pavement material. Traffic then breaks down this weakened area, forming a pothole.

Lance offers guidance on effective pothole repair methods and preventative measures, such as improving drainage and implementing a timely maintenance schedule to minimize water ingress.

Rutting

Occurs when the pavement deforms under the load of traffic, creating grooves along the direction of travel. It's often a result of insufficient pavement thickness, weak asphalt mix, or poor subgrade conditions.

Lance can evaluate the structural integrity of the pavement to identify the cause of rutting and propose solutions that may include strengthening the pavement structure or improving the quality of the asphalt mix.
